FLEAS

Fleas are highly specialised bloodsucking parasites belonging to the order of insects called Siphonaptera, which means “wingless siphon”. They have the formidable reputation of claiming more victims than all the wars ever fought. This was as a result of the “bubonic” (Black Death) plague which spread throughout the world in the 14th century causing the deaths of over 200 million people. Now, these insects are better known for their irritation and pest status worldwide.

Fleas are a nuisance to their hosts, causing an itching sensation which in turn may result in the host attempting to remove the pest by biting, pecking, scratching, etc. in the vicinity of the parasite. Fleas are not simply a source of annoyance, however. Flea bites generally cause the formation of a slightly raised, swollen itching spot with a single puncture point at the centre (similar to a mosquito bite).

Fleas are extremely common in domestic properties, with eggs laid in the vicinity of the host. Pupa can remain dormant in excess of months if temperature and food is not favourable. Adult fleas emerge from the pupa in response to vibrations made by a host. Adult fleas live exclusively as parasites of warm-blooded animals, especially mammals, although birds may also be attacked (bird fleas). Whilst they show a certain degree of host preference, fleas are by no means specific and will feed on other animals in the absence of the normal host.

The bites often appear in clusters or lines of two bites, and can remain itchy and inflamed for up to several weeks afterwards. Fleas can also lead to hair loss as a result of frequent scratching and biting by the animal, and can cause anemia in extreme cases.
